Re: Newbie looking for P1 & P2 curriculum recommendations
The P1 syllabus goes up to addition and subtraction within 100. So a child is expected to be able to to subtract any two digit number from any other two digit number, provided that the answer > 0. I wouldn't say that my daughter was ever "taught" to memorise anything. But, through practice/worksheet...

Re: Newbie looking for P1 & P2 curriculum recommendations
My daughter here in Singapore use the My Pals are Here series. She has a textbook and something called a pupil's workbook.
Note that the 'Singapore maths' doesn't really get going until around P3/P4 and then it really appears to ramp up in P5/P6.

Re: General Election - Coming Soon - 11th September
So it looks like a big swing back to the PAP.
Far from making gains, WP have a fight to hold on to their existing seats.
And PAP are heading for well above 60% nationwide.

Re: General Election - Coming Soon - 11th September
Right, despite not being able to vote, I think election night is worth staying up for. Here's the picture as I understand it. 1) The PAP looks a certain winner in more than 2/3rds of the seats. Any sort of action anywhere except the places I list below would be a huge surprise. 2) The interesting se...

Re: General Election - Coming Soon - 11th September
So, as we get to the last day of campaigning, what do we think is going to happen on Friday? (One of the oddities of Singapore elections is that there is absolutely no objective sense of how the parties are faring.) My take: - WP to add one more GRC and one more SMC, where they are up against an unp...

Re: General Election - Coming Soon - 11th September
The curious thing is I am used to governments calling elections early only when they are playing on a very transient advantage. You can look at PM Lee's national day rally speech to see the PAP capitalising on the transient advantage of LKY's passing and SG50. The pitch to the electorate is clearly...

Re: General Election ...
I enjoyed the 2011 election. I even trudged along to a rally at Serangoon Stadium one night. There will surely be a further swing to the opposition this time - I'd venture that the question is how much. Will the PAP be able to give up their usual habit of patronising and alienating the electorate? W...

Here is more of a breakdown of non-PR foreign workers by pass type: http://www.mom.gov.sg/documents-and-publications/foreign-workforce-numbers And some of the data for previous years for comparison: http://www.momsingapore.blogspot.sg/2012/09/manpower-realities-beyond-numbers.html Edit: and some eve...

Re: ST says "Higher salary bar for foreigners seeking family visas"
Please refer me to any report on subject matter: "numbers of foreigners (table out their nationalities/countries) working here now compared to 10 years ago, 5 years ago, 2 years ago. Specify group; E, PEP, S, work permit" This document tells you as much as the government wants you to know: http://p...

Re: Man Shot Dead Near Shangri-La Hotel Singapore
It's interesting seeing the reaction on social media. Near-universal praise for the police.
In other countries, people might be a bit slower to believe the police's account. Others might question whether it was necessary to use lethal force.
I say this with no agenda. It's just quite eye-opening.

OK, I genuinely offer this in a constructive spirit... Many of you regulars come across as very, shall we say, aggressive. This isn't always the case and there are some notable exceptions - e.g. JR8 and Strong Eagle (most of the time, anyway). I haven't posted very much since I joined, and in part t...
