Re: Phone service in Singapore help!

Two phones is a bummer; better you get one dual SIM phone for your 'native' SIM and a local SIM for your 4G. That'll see you right.

Re: Retiring in Singapore

Probably, because my kids and grandkids are Singaporeans as well. ;-) Oh, I was also told the last time I renewed my re-entry permit that I need not be employed to renew my re-entry permit once I was over the age of 55 (but I forgot to ask if that also applied to PTS PRs, so while I am theoreticall...

Re: Retiring in Singapore

Cheers, PNGMK. That said, SMS mentioned "family ties", presumably by marriage. I wonder if his scenario works when there's no family ties eh.

Re: Retiring in Singapore

For PRs wanting to retire in Singapore, would starting/running a (SOHO) business be the way to go? I mean, you can then get an EP; just extend it periodically. You would still need to work of course, but it shouldn't be anywhere near full-time by then. Either way, I don't think it's a good idea to n...

Just out of curiosity how come your UK visa isn't getting done by the UK embassy here?

Re: Buy laptop

I think with the purchasing power Singapore has and the SGD exchange as high as it is, the best buys will be in Singapore. This also works out best warranty-wise.

Caveat: you may need to nego.

Re: Would like your opinion on to retire or not

Retiring isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Rather than retiring outright, I'd aim for working a few hours per day. It's more of an optional thing, so the real do-or-die pressure is off. But equally important, it'll keep you on the ball, reducing shrinkage. Of the brain I mean. To wit, you can do...

Re: Transferwise do cheap transfers but more important can provide US, UK and Aus bank accounts

A mate of mine has been keen to give them a go. Let's see what he comes up with.

Then again, if the recent buzz about GlobalCoin is true, we may all be using this token for online transfer of funds, even before this year is over. That is, those that have Facebook.

Re: Transferwise do cheap transfers but more important can provide US, UK and Aus bank accounts

The main reason I'd like to explore them a bit is that PayPal has been getting greedy of late. One of my due diligence litmus tests when contemplating a new partner is to contact them, by email, by phone. In the case of Transferwise, they're scoring 0 out of 2. They just didn't bother to get back to...

Re: Transferwise do cheap transfers but more important can provide US, UK and Aus bank accounts

Well, they never called back and I have no missed calls, so AFAIC, they're a non-starter.

There's only one thing worse than a company ignoring you after you reach out to them and that's being a customer to a company ignoring you when you reach out to them.

Re: Transferwise do cheap transfers but more important can provide US, UK and Aus bank accounts

True that, SMS.

Either way, I'm teetering at the moment, but will tip one way or the other by today.

That being said, it may be moot if and when GlobalCoin really does come to pass, as it could well render Transferwise, their copycats, as well as that infernal PayPal, as relevant as AltaVista.

Re: Transferwise do cheap transfers but more important can provide US, UK and Aus bank accounts

Sorry SMS, in my humble opinion, the issue is not whether their office details can be found by searching Google. The Transferwise site show show all contact details loud and clear. It's a fin tech. I realize they're an online company, but I believe a main money centre the likes of Singapore warrants...

Re: Transferwise do cheap transfers but more important can provide US, UK and Aus bank accounts

Be all that as it may, I have a huge bee under my bonnet for companies that bend over backwards to not display their phone number on their website. Since when is a "Helpdesk" just an FAQ? They say they're backed by MAS, but do they even have an office here? So after searching the site high and low, ...
