Re: US Family Housing Advice (yes I've filled out the form)

Hi listmates, Just an update and a little advice -- we moved 3 weeks ago and the Capella on Sentosa has been absolutely divine (but for the 6:30 am bus pick-up for UWC East). But still well worth it, thanks for weighing in on that excellent decision. Undergoing property search right now, had trouble...

Raffles Town Place Reviews?

Hi Everbody, We are an American family who just moved here a few weeks ago. We are considering a place (not a condo) very close to the Raffles Town Club. Facilities look nice. From their site, it looks like they're no longer selling individual memberships but you can buy them on the open market. Any...

Buy hoverboard before we leave US?

We are moving to SG from US in two weeks. We want to buy a hoverboard (not a high end one, but one of the more basic ones) for my daughter's upcoming birthday. Should we buy one here and include in our container or buy one there? No idea if they're hard to come by in SG or more expensive than in US....

Re: Feedback re: Temporary Living on Sentosa

Thanks, JRB. It's interesting that the queries I've posed directly to car places have yielded better results than the offers from our "destination services" provider the co retained -- they came back with boiler plate quotes for cars I'm not even interested in, and I suspect the rates are higher sin...

Re: Feedback re: Temporary Living on Sentosa

Thanks for the detailed reply, all good points to follow-up on. We booked the Capella and, since our kids are young, I think it will be great. I will follow-up on the transit stuff, if UWC bus doesn't pick up I'll figure out a back-up plan before we get a car -- Capella shuttle to VivoCity or CBD or...

Re: Feedback re: Temporary Living on Sentosa

Belated thank you to all -- we have booked the Capella duplex and look forward to a quiet month of life at the beach while we get acquainted with SG. I have heard that our arrival date Aug 9 is a national holiday -- anything to be aware of/fun to do while we fight the jet lag from the US? So I know ...

Re: Feedback re: Temporary Living on Sentosa

Thanks JRB, your comments are always spot-on. I thought locals might pan the Sentosa idea but it's encouraging folks seem to see some value in it. So landing services probably isn't the right term (I can't remember what it's called on our budget spreadsheet, maybe destination services?)-- what we re...

Re: Feedback re: Temporary Living on Sentosa

Thumbs up for that quick response, PNGMK! I know it's a bubble but a bubble might be a nice introduction for my wee ones (and that first week before school starts we could have fun exploring Sentosa, right?).

Feedback re: Temporary Living on Sentosa

Hi Listmates, After so much back and forth, looks like we are headed to SG in August! We're a US family of 5 with 3 kids (11, 9 and 5). During my look-see my real estate guy had an interesting idea for our month-ish long temporary housing situation -- Sentosa. Our temporary housing budget is healthy...

Re: US Family Housing Advice (yes I've filled out the form)

Thanks to you both for the replies and, yes, JRB, the consolidation is helpful. We've been knee deep in dealing with the timing of entity formation/employment/dependent passes, etc. trying to confirm that an August timetable is realistic. It's perilous to be the first person at a company to have mov...

US Family Housing Advice (yes I've filled out the form)

So many of you have already been gracious and one suggested I post here so here goes: just home from second look-see (almost moved 3 years ago). Older kids have been accepted into a school we love and looking for home advice. Would prefer condo to house so kids could swim with friends after school. ...

East Coast School for Boy Turning 6 in November

Hi listmates! We are an American family of 5 likely moving this summer. We are knee-deep in school application decisions and I'm doing a second look-see the end of May. There is a scenario where my older kids would go to a school on the East Coast where there wouldn't be room for my younger who turn...

Re: stamford, dulwich, nexus - any input??

This thread is now a little old, but I'm wondering if anyone has any new-ish thoughts on Nexus. I did a look-see a few years ago (then didn't move) and I liked a lot of things about Nexus but the space did feel a bit like a ghost-town. Has enrollment gone up significantly? Sense of class sizes nowad...

Advice re: Mid-Year Admission to International School

Hi, We are a U.S. family (potentially) moving to SG with our 3 kids (11, 9 and 5). It's looking like (for business reasons) this wouldn't happen until around the holidays. I know most schools offer January admission, but I don't have a good feel for how unusual it is, what disadvantages (or possible...

Re: Expat Package Proposal for US Exec

Interesting, I have to say the lawyer in me appreciates this level of detail. I have to admit I've been more focused on US tax consequences, as it seems like it's the US tax that really kills you (or the US employer)!
