Re: Am I insane to spend this much on rent with my salary

My spending habits are such that I hardly get to use credit cards. Our groceries are different from the rest, Indian groceries, so we mostly shop at Indian groceries stores and they don't accept credit cards. Fruits and vegetables we shop from the wet market, which is much more cheaper than fair pri...

Re: Am I insane to spend this much on rent with my salary

There is no right or wrong. It depends on what you want at the end of the day. You should first figure out how much you want to save/invest Vs spend and then figure out of the amount you spend what gives you maximum happiness. I watched this brilliant Bogleheads interview by a human behaviour exper...

Re: SRS investment options

And since this is an expat forum, take note that the maximum annual SRS contribution for EP holders is $35.7k (considering you don’t have CPF). Also note that an EP holder can withdraw their SRS in full after 10 years without penalty and you’ll only pay tax on half of the withdrawn amount. If you a...

Re: An idea for Singapore? CDN10,000 per year for vacant condo; lie and it's $10,000 a day!

And my niece is bragging that she's finally found a tenant after 5 months of being vacant (formally 2600 now 2000 But HBD 5 room in Hougang) so a bit out of the way (near YCK Rd). Hi SMS, I guess we have now come a full circle, rents must be back above 2600 now isn't it? My landlord is asking me fo...

Re: SRS investment options

You got it right. Robos are okay for people who are starting out and don't want to deal with FX, bid ask spreads etc. Regarding SRS, there are limitations, so we just need to choose what is the best available. I would skip robo for SRS and pick and pick a unit trust that closely matches an index fu...

Re: SRS investment options

What is your view on entering investing in SP500 ETF (VUSD) at current levels? Intention is to hold for 5-8 years at least. Malcontent has given very good answers. I would recommend read the book The four pillars of investment by William Bernstein and spend some time on Bogleheads forum. You need t...

Re: SRS investment options

I guess that you probably could consider a robo's costs analogous to the costs that you incur when you buy or sell ETFs through your trading app. Not necessarily the same cost, but analogous. I find it very hard to believe that robos can be as cheap as the ETFs they are building your portfolio with...

Re: HK or Singapore

I think Singapore residential property prices are ridiculously inflated already based on; 1) Extremely poor rental returns already (a $2m condo will get approx $40k in gross rent PA - even worse for landed properties) 2) A huge number of empty units with landlords unwilling to negotiate 3) The demo...

Re: 11 years in Singapore - PR Rejected

Did you manage to get a PR? Your duration of stay has been very long and around 2009 getting PR was comparatively easier. No, just like OP, I have applied atleast 6 times and rejected everytime. In 2009 they already started cutting the number of approvals, you can see the figures 2009 it was like 3...

Re: Australian tax residency changes

Go to Oz WD40. Don't wait. Its too late for me now. At 41, I have already chosen my path(or rather the path has chosen me) and I have no appetite to move to a new country now and start all over again. The fact that I didnt get PR means, I didnt grow any roots here and I saved up enough to be able t...

Re: Australian tax residency changes

Australia is also giving out PRs faster to people who are in the country, right now. My sister moved to Melbourne 4 years ago and she just got her PR. Here I am waiting since 2009. Australia has an open and honest immigration system and needs the migrants. Yeah, they also have this bridge visa thin...
