Re: Do you miss flying?

Very interesting points both. I think Singapore had already scored a big win by getting to host the WEF. For expats with young children, it is a such a big relief that schools are open. I can stay and home and forego leisure travel but cannot imagine kids at home for an extended period of time. Sent...

Re: If you are here for money, when will you stop?

Meanwhile, a disclaimer applies to this entire thread, given the upcoming Great Reset. :-) Curious, what kind of reset are you expecting. I am assuming you mean sky rocketing inflation. But what kind of inflation is it going to be. A supply side or a demand side. So far we have had only asset infla...

Re: If you are here for money, when will you stop?

I would personally prefer UK to Canada. UK weather is better. It is a much bigger economy. Lots of jobs especially in Finance. Much closer to Asia. Lots of history and culture. Personally I would love to explore Europe for a few years.

Re: If you are here for money, when will you stop?

Canada welcomes you. So long as you are fine with the tax. 400k PRs to be dished annually, till 2023. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-10-30/trudeau-ratchets-up-immigration-targets-to-boost-recovery I like Canada but it's awfully cold and really expensive in the cities where the work is...

Re: If you are here for money, when will you stop?

If I were in your position, I'd probably just make the move back to India. But only if I had a good idea of how I'd spend my time and avoid losing my mental sharpness. As it stands, I wish that by 50 I'm in a similar situation as you, where I "can" retire (in my case hopefully in Singapore) because...

Re: If you are here for money, when will you stop?

I would never be able to retire on $2k/mo, that won’t even cover our vacation budget... plus we still have to put two kids through college, that isn’t going to be cheap. Therefore, I’ve pretty much given up on the idea of retiring early - which is not a bad thing, at least I’ll have something to do...

Re: If you are here for money, when will you stop?

It didn't ask me for an email. I filled this Annual salary:100k Monthly expenses if I have to retire in India: 2k Current networth: 1m Not sure whether it is telling me that I need to accumulate another 470k? It didn't ask me my age, which I think is a big factor. Sent from my Redmi 10X using Tapat...

Re: If you are here for money, when will you stop?

WD, I reckon you'll probably find there's a handy link conveniently placed there about their investment fund or some such. I.e. they'll be inclined to underrate your nest egg. That said, I used to think 1M would be enough, but frankly, I wonder now, given infinity QE, negative interest rates, yield...

Re: Malls in the city seems quieter

Yeah suburban malls like those in Jurong are back to normal, very crowded even on weekdays. But cbd malls are a shadow of their past. We went to lucky plaza on a weekday evening during the December school holiday and it was like a ghost town. Takashimaya and Metro in Orchard road were also quite des...

Re: If you are here for money, when will you stop?

If you want to check whether you have enough to retire, Chris Hogan put out this retirement IQ tool. Normally I don’t bother with these tools because I’ve done my spreadsheets... but this one is interesting and quick. After looking at this, I may need a little more than expected. https://www.chrish...

Re: If you are here for money, when will you stop?

Why one or the other? Why not a bit of both? I intend to ease back by 70% by the time I consider myself done work-wise, but will continue to stay active by working, say a couple of hours a day. This way you kill 3 birds with the 1 stone: 1. You stay active so your brain doesn't wilt. (Use it or los...

Re: 4th PR application

I have friends who are in this group that you are referring to. I might include myself as well. The options exist but I would not describe it as a safety net. What you have (reading your other posts) in terms of being in a position to move back to India with a big chunk of savings is a safety net. ...

Re: 4th PR application

I was just curious about job openings in the United Kingdom and did a search for a generic term like "SQL". Quite optimistic looking at the job openings. Here is one that closely fits my job description: https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/search/?currentJobId=2325344742&geoId=101165590&keywords=sql&locat...

Re: 4th PR application

Actually I don't think that will happen. MOM is pulling a slick one that is going to bite a lot of them in the arse. MOM is giving out PEPs left & right, unlike the old days where is was a rarity to see someone posting successfully obtaining the PEP. Back then it was for 5 years but also key was th...

Re: If you are here for money, when will you stop?

Thanks malcontent. I have been going with the flow till now. I could just continue for another 2 or 3 years as my EP has been renewed for 3 years last month. My experience with Singapore workplaces has been horrible. People in Singapore workplaces are either always firefighting or they are just work...
