Re: Masks rules in Singapore?

TBH, never understood the face shields. Those are good for preventing bulk liquid splash to eyes - blood and body fluids, liquid nitrogen.

You’ll never see these face shields used against influenza....which COVID is most similar to...

Re: When do you think we can stop wearing masks?

One thing I am glad the masks will be good for - curbing those excessive public displays of affection, especially on the MRT.

Wouldn’t mind the masks being enforced longer just to cut those out...

Re: When do you think we can stop wearing masks?

A few people in a what few thousand people hdb block. I would still call it a small fraction, would it reach 1,% of population ? Obviously not a big impact as the spreading is 0-5 cases per day now outside of the dormitories. So not a big impact those rule breakers are having. So either it doesn't ...

Re: When do you think we can stop wearing masks?

Suspect mainly Japan, Taiwan and possibly S Korea are the only populations that can be trusted to wear a mask without being cajoled...

Re: When do you think we can stop wearing masks?

Never underestimate the abilities of humans to transmit diseases. At least we have a chance of getting close to zero.

Look at syphilis, all these goddamn condoms and cheap antibiotics to eradicate it. Can we succeed? Hell no...

Covid-19: Are we sampling to determine infection rates?

Antibody testing is very dependent on good assays, because you may have to test individuals up to 3 times to understand their status, spanning several weeks. This, it is far from simple to do an antibody test on the population as you only get a cross-sectional snapshot of a dynamic situation. HBV ha...

Re: Covid-19: Are we sampling to determine infection rates?

Far more complex than that. Some indications are that some people may not be generating enough antibody to be useful. Furthermore, some people may get re-infected. This will have implications on the efficacy of the candidate vaccines, plus also possible side effects if they are pushing hard to gener...

Re: How long do you think COVID19 will last

While situation makes me think of yellow fever and smallpox. People receiving YF vaccine receive a certificate, indicating lifelong antibody protection. Kind of a passport in some countries. When I took the smallpox vaccine years ago (working on my PhD), I do recall signing a document that says in t...

Re: How long do you think COVID19 will last

SG Tuas factories and construction are dependent on FWs. Somewhat impossible to operate if you cut off traffic from JB. Would be interesting to see a global rethink on supply chain - will people tolerate higher pricing with manufacturing moving out of China. Also interesting if WHO revises its crite...

Re: How long do you think COVID19 will last

The asymptomatic spread is the real PITA. Most viruses have a short sub clinical period and sick people can be isolated or treated quickly. Hoping some Pharma can find a cheap repurposed drug with 75% efficacy to help. In the absence of a vaccine, that will help a lot. Easier to deal with short term...
