Chrome BS

Post by Brah » Sat, 03 Oct 2015 12:27 pm

I have an admittedly older PC (don't ask) so I don't expect the stability of a new system, however, about 6-9 months back I noticed Chrome hanging often and when trying to kill the entire window of multiple tabs, or, certain parent processes, my PC would BSoD.

I use multiple browsers simultaneously - Opera, FF, Chrome, and occasionally IE, it is only Chrome that does this.

With Chrome I don't have a lot of add-ins, and there is some info on the net about others having these issues, I tried some of the suggestions, but it just happened again after it not happening for many months.

Anyone else have similar issues with Chrome?

You may have two versions of flash player enabled. Go to chrome://plugins/. Make sure the button at the top right is set to 'Details'. Search to see if there are two versions of flash player. If yes, keep the Pepperflash one enabled, disable the other.

I see Pepperflash and Widevine, the latter seems like it could be a culprit, have disabled it to check

Nope, didn't help.

I have 2 problems with Chrome (and only Chrome),

The BSoD one I started having a year or so ago, now I know to kill it by first closing each tab one by one, then kill the parent process. If I kill the multi-tab browser window or certain processes there is a 70-90% chance it will BS.

The hanging issue started a few months back, even with a relatively fresh (an hour or less) browser sessions, pages stop loading and refresh will not work, I have to completely shut down Chrome and restart.

The first issue is manageable, the second is a real nuisance.

Hamburger icon>More tools>task manager or Shift+Esc

Who's using up a lot of RAM? RAM usage is a common complaint with Chrome.

And just spitballing here; go to settings and search for "Use hardware acceleration when available", toggle that and see what happens.

I also found this: http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-su ... hrome.html

tl;dr version: old device drivers.

I really don't have much to go on and these are just random suggestions.

Did you note whether your browsing style has higher usage of ram/CPU in chrome when compared to other browsers? Sometimes it's just old hardware overheating and becoming menopausal

Chrome does use a lot but not as much as FF and FF doesn't crash or hang often, and when it does it doesn't BS

yeah it could certainly be drivers, all of that stuff is way out of date

Just update your computer; install a different OS if you have to if you don't qualify to get Windows 10 for free.

I have the opposite problem; FF keeps crashing on me. I also received an OTA update for FF and it removed all my add-ons; now I'm just too lazy to put them back in.

My Windows 7 virtual machine won't update; I don't know if I'll even bother keeping that up to date (NB: I used my laptop Windows Authentication key for it so it's a legit install).
