Hello everyone. I am a Malaysian citizen and planning to move and search for a better career opportunities in Singapore this coming February. I only hold a secondary certificate ( SPM level ) but have at least 8 years of working experience in admin and customer service field here in Malaysia.
I would appreciate if anyone would help me with my questions below:-

1) What do i tell to the Singapore Immigration about my stay and job search in Singapore? ( obviously i have to state how long will i be staying on the white card )
2) Is it possible for me to rent a common room with my foreign documentations?
3) Should i apply a short term visit pass at MOM's website online first?

Without degree, your chances of being allowed to work in Singapore are low (unless you qualify for a PEP).
1. You can come on a normal visit (I believe Malaysians get 90 days on arrival) - job search is allowed on this (but not work).
2. No, you need a residence visa above 6 months to rent anything.
3. See 1.

If you are willing to work for 1000~1100/mo on a work permit, yeah, you can find a job here still. Not as easy, but doable.

No you're only allowed to work on ONE job for only ONE employer. Doing any other work out of your designated employment is an offence to law.

Should read up more in MOM website.

Hey there guys. Sorry to bother once again. U mention above that i cant rent anything until i have a residence visa after six months. My questions are:

a) What type of terms of place is it possible for me to rent (besides hotels) during the 6 months period?
b) How do i apply for the residence visa?

Basically the moment you have a work visa, PR etc (or work pass, they may call it) you can rent. You don't have to wait until 6 months of owning that to rent.

You need a employment visa that is valid for at least 6 months. e.g., S & EP's are usually granted for 12 to 24 months. You don't need to have been here 6 months before you can rent.

quite a few malaysians will love in JB and commute into singapore each morning.

the singapore $ goes a very long way when converted to Ringitt, and living is unbeleivably cheap in malaysia as well.

Getting a car wil cost an arm and a leg tho, you better be prepared to handle a long commute.

You can get a special pass for the border if you do it every day, I think this is only for Malaysians tho.

Yes, that (subletting to a non-resident foreigner) is illegal and can get both your friend and the landlord into trouble.
As long as you don't have a resident visa, hotels and serviced apartments are the only legal options. You can get a simple room for S$60/night if you search.

Lots of people sleeping on the beach in tents too. Even cheaper, and probably nicer than a Hotel 81!

My impression is that you already knew it was illegal, just not what the consequences are. The way you describe it is as if this situation just came about that way by chance, but to me it suggests a clear plan to deceive the landlord from the outset.

You better tread very carefully!

I seriously wasn't sure if it is illegal. Just tot i might ask and I'm glad i did. But i was hoping the benefit of the doubt. Hehe! And now i know, I sure don't want to get other people in trouble for the sake of my own. Thank you again. Smile

Camping is allowed in certain areas of Pulau Ubin, Pasir Ris Park, Changi Beach, East Coast and West Coast Park. But, typically for over-regulated Singapore, you have to register and get a permit from the authorities first. And you are only allowed to camp 4 days in a month. Here's a link: http://www.axs.com.sg/phpweb/consumer/npark_camping_permit.php

As a m'asian coming into Singapore you are given 90 days on a visitor's pass.

If I were you,I'd 'bunk' with this friend of yours and use that 90 days to look for a job.

SGP$60 / day at a hotel is going to get you a stay here in a month or less.

You have a friend who's willing to help you so take that help but get it clear with your friend that you need a roof over your head whilst you look for a job. That way, I am sure he/she will understand.

OMG! U just saved my life! I sent her a link of our discussion and she agrees to let me stay with her until i get my own. But there is a few things she is worried of and would like u to assist on it.
a) Will she get in trouble of letting me stay at her place even if she is willing to?
b) How do i get the visitor's pass for 90 days?
Is it given to me automatically as soon as i arrive to Singapore?
c) Do i have to specifically tell the immigration officer dat I am looking for a job in singapore?

As she's the main tenant, see if you can discuss with her and have her asked her landlord for permission for a friend who is visiting to stay (provided you have a valid pass to prove your stay) for x no of days / months.

b) How do i get the visitor's pass for 90 days?
When you arrive into Singapore, your passport will be stamped with the number of days you are allowed in the country. Be sure to get a valid Singapore address prior to entering the country so that when the immigration officials ask you, you can explain that you are visiting Singapore and staying with a friend. Assuming your job search has exhausted the no of days granted for your stay in Singapore, then do like what a lot of foreigners do - go to JB for a day and come back with a new stamp with new no of valid stay timeframe.

Is it given to me automatically as soon as i arrive to Singapore?
Please see reply to (b)

c) Do i have to specifically tell the immigration officer dat I am looking for a job in singapore?
No! And don't do that! Visitors to this country are not allowed to work unless you come here and apply for LTVP (check MOM's website on this acronym)
