Piracy 2014

Not quite a specific news story, but ongoing piracy. I found this map and some of the reports quite interesting:

The map above are reports for just 2014 so far. I know piracy is high in the region, I always assumed it was further up the Strait of Malacca, not literally at Singapore's doorstep. I guess I now understand better why the ships parked outside my old bedroom window facing the strait always had their lights lit up so brightly even in Singapore's waters.

Thankfully most attacks around Singapore and the Malacca Straits are robberies rather than hijackings or hostage/ransom scenarios that ships have to deal with in the Gulf of Aden. Probably no consolation to the seafarers onboard vessels that are attacked though...
